What is the Change Curve?

I'm Rachel Flower, commercial lawyer and coach to business leaders. I've been using a great tool called "Change Curve theory" to support my clients through this difficult time. I want to share it with more people as I've seen so many people struggling to cope in the aftermath from this pandemic.

The Change Curve is a concept originally used in relation to grief and dealing with trauma. You may have heard of the work of Elizabeth Kubler-Ross and the Grief Curve - used to support people coping with bereavement. There is a "curve" that we follow in the aftermath of a big change, and stages that you go through.

In the aftermath of this pandemic, we have all experienced sudden change and a sense of panic and shock (and fear/anxiety) together.

You may have noticed that you have experienced a whole wave of different emotions, and sometimes you may have felt disconnected from others who were expressing different views to yours.

Even with close friends and family, you may have felt in conflict at times.

This is because when we go through change and in particular after a serious and difficult change - we react in similar ways, but not always at the same time.

When we understand the Change Curve, it becomes a really helpful way of looking at how you respond to crisis and how you can help your family, friends, communities, teams and customers (and yourself) to come through times of crisis too.

Understanding where you are on the change curve

This is an unprecedented time in history, with many experiencing difficulty and our shared experience has been both traumatic and sudden in its arrival.

Now we are a few months on - you might be embracing opportunity and feeling excited and energised, or you may be still feeling frustrated, upset, panicked and even depressed.

It depends on where you are on the change curve. And understanding more about how this works can help you to grow and adapt, and move forward into a "new normal". Importantly it can help you to empathise and help others.

Change Curve Theory can help you to feel better day to day and help you make rational decisions in how you respond to this crisis.

And it shows you how you can help others too, by understanding where they are on the change curve and adapting your behaviours and words to meet them.

What we'll be talking about...

Navigating your way out of chaos

It's natural - and normal - to feel scared, shocked, shocked in the aftermath of change. Explore tools to become more self aware, catch your thoughts and behaviours - and how to help yourself move forward into acceptance and then positive action.

Understanding the 3 phases of change

Broadly speaking, we move from chaos into acceptance and then into a "new normal". Learn how to recognise the phases in yourself and others, and explore techniques to help you navigate through the current crisis and help others too. It's so helpful to know that your responses are human and to allow yourself space to grow.

Leading others out of this crisis

As you gain more insight into your own behaviours you will also learn how you can communicate and engage with others to lead them positively out of this crisis, too. This is great knowledge and will help you build resilience and self-awareness as well as giving you confidence in your own abilities to help others.

This is a really important conversation.

As a commercial lawyer and business mentor to women in business, I've spent 20 years helping people with disputes, to cope with sudden change, make important decisions, overcome adversity and challenge. I've been through a lot of personal life challenges and adversity myself which has led me - over the years - to study principles of resilience and how to respond to change and uncertainty.

At this time, you need to find a "new normal". We need to find that "new normal" together. Let's talk openly about the challenge and then explore ways that will help you move forward with re-commitment and greater focus.

And if you're already familiar with change curve theory, let's join together and think about this very helpful concept in the context of the global pandemic we're going through together.
