WEAK WOMEN

I blogged a while ago to say I am working through the Roald Dahl books with my 6 year old Ruby.

We're on James and the Giant Peach at the moment, and the peach is flying above New York city - all the citizens think its a bomb and the policemen and firemen are out in force. 

"A few women screamed. Others knelt down on the sidewalks and began praying aloud"

Ruby interrupted me. "Mummy, why is he saying it's the women who are screaming and falling over? And why aren't there any women police or fire people?"

A-ha. We had to have a long discussion about how even though the book was only written in 1961 - not that long ago really - life has changed a lot since then and people in today's world more readily agree that men and women are equal.

She really couldn't get her head around it. She went on to tell me that she play fights all the boys at playtime and she nearly always wins (hmmm - not sure how I feel about this bit!)

But it is so wonderful that I am raising a daughter who feels like that. In the western world we have made much progress in recent years. Other parts of the world still have a long way to go.

My Big Why is about championing equality in the modern workplace and empowering women in business to create the lives and businesses they dream of without worrying about social or cultural "norms"

I love and am so grateful for my life for that reason. Only 50 years ago, the concept of a female entrepreneur was very rare. 

We're so lucky to have the opportunities we have been given - by generations of women before us - let's take advantage of them and inspire the next generation to do the same.
